Paleolithic Horses

gorham mare for web.JPG

The horse is one of the most depicted animal beings in Paleolithic Europe and a mark of Homo sapiens art. In this scene from the Gorham Etching we find an uneasy pregnant speckled mare with turned head and open mouth. Her fore hooves are lifted as if she appears to rise. The image portrays the emotion of the animal being and the perception of the Paleolithic artist from 36,000 years ago.

Embedded in the Gallery of Discs is a Przerwalski's horse with its short stocky frame and raised mane. The horse is speckled and has the appearance of lifting off.
